About this service

What is NHS Pharmacy First?

NHS Pharmacy First is a new service that allows you to get expert clinical advice and treatment for a range of common conditions directly from your local pharmacy, without needing to see a GP.

Trained pharmacists can assess your symptoms, offer advice, and provide NHS-funded treatments (including prescription-only medicines where appropriate) for a number of minor health conditions.

Pharmacy First covers seven common conditions:

No, you can walk in to a participating pharmacy and speak to a pharmacist. In some cases, you may be referred by NHS 111, your GP practice, or urgent care. Some pharmacies may also offer online consultations or bookings.

We recommend booking an appointment to avoid waiting and ensure a pharmacist is available to help you.

Our pharmacists will carry out a clinical assessment to determine if antibiotics are appropriate. If they are, we can provide them directly, saving you a trip to the GP. If not, we’ll offer advice on how to manage your symptoms and let you know when to seek further help.

Yes, the consultation is free.
If treatment is needed and you’re eligible for free NHS prescriptions, your medication will also be free of charge.

If you usually pay for NHS prescriptions, standard charges will apply for any supplied medicines.

If your symptoms are severe, worsening, or not suitable for pharmacy treatment, we’ll refer you to the appropriate healthcare provider to ensure you get the care you need.
